Saturday 9: The Times of Your Life

I love the Saturday 9 meme!  It has been way too long since I have participated, and the questions are always really fun writing prompts for me.  So here we go :D

This week was inspired by Paul Anka -- which I will never be able to see the same again after binge watching Gilmore Girls and the episode where Lorelei names the dog Paul Anka.

1) This song is all about memories. How far back can you remember? What's your earliest memory?

I had a hard enough time remembering yesterday morning for question #2....I guess I was about 5 or 6 and riding in the front seat of my mom's Toyota Camry.  Don't freak out and call CPS.  It was 3 decades ago and a different time...I rode in the back of a pick up truck as well.  Anyway, I had this tiny porcelain squirrel that I was extraordinarily proud of.  I have no idea where I got it from, but I remember that I loved it and took it everywhere.  I held it up between my thumb and index finger trying to show the young guy in the truck next to us.

He pointed a gun.  I believe it was larger barrel 45 Colt type gun *I know very little about guns*

Now, I have no idea if he could somehow see that far and realize it was a tiny squirrel, or if he was just a major ass hat finding laughter in blindly pointing firearms at small children.  Either way, I was scared, hunkered down, and remembered that moment the rest of my life.

2) The first line is "Good morning, yesterday." What do you remember about yesterday morning?

I woke up with a searing pain in my gut.  Last night I mistakenly drank a few Red's Apple Ale thinking that they were a cider.  It was a really stupid mistake and then I voluntarily enjoyed some pizza as well.  Damn gluten.

3) This song was originally a 60-second jingle, featured in a commercial for Kodak film. Do you ever use film? Or are all your pictures digital?

I learned the art of photography and developing film in middle school.  It was fascinating!  It was kind of a let down when I worked the Photo and Video counter at King Soopers in high school and all we did was load the film into a machine while the lights were turned off.   Now, everything is digital.  But I still love using prints in scrapbooks.

4) Who took the most recent photo of you?

Besides the awesome Snapchat filters I was playing with yesterday?  It would be one of my favorite bartenders taking a selfie of herself and me in the background making faces at my phone using my Snapchat...Wow...that sounds very "high school".  As for a posed picture, I have no idea.  I purposely act like a dope in pics because I hate pictures of myself.
5) This week's featured artist, Paul Anka, was born in Canada and enjoyed appearing in a made-for-TV Perry Mason movie with fellow Canadian, Raymond Burr. Do you enjoy courtroom dramas?

Nope.  I was pre-law my first attempt at college.  I hate that they break all the rules and I will acctually yell at the TV "objection! Approaching the witness!" the same way my soon to be hubby yells at the fumble made by whatever sports team he is watching.
6) At 15, Anka won a supermarket contest by collecting the most Campbell soup can wrappers. The prize was a trip to New York. Do you enter contests and sweepstakes? Play the lottery?

I do love my scratch tickets.  I have only ever purchased a few Powerball or Mega Millions tickets, but I have exact plans for all that money if I ever do win.
7) This year Paul Anka performed throughout Florida (Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Clearwater and Fort Myers). The Sunshine State is a popular vacation destination. Do you have a favorite spot in Florida?

My parents took my brother and I to Disney World when I was 13 or so.  Only place I have been in the state.  I don't think it is fair to issue it "favorite status" just yet.

8) In 1976, the year this song was on the charts, an earthquake hit China. Have you ever experienced an earthquake?

I have not.  Thankfully.
9) Random question: Do you know CPR?

I would love to say that I do, but I am not I can.  I learned CPR many moons ago, but if anything were to ever happen, I am not sure that the skill would come back to me.  Perhaps I should just sign up for a class and refresh myself.

Saturday 9: Hey, Soul Sister

Saturday 9: Hey, Soul Sister
(because John suggested Train)

If you're not familiar with today's song, you can hear it here.

1) The video was shot on a street corner in Echo Park in central Los Angeles. If you saw a film crew making a video in your neighborhood, would you stop to watch? Or would you just keep walking?
I am nosy.  I would totally hang out and watch for a bit.
2) The singer says he remembers his girl in every dream he dreams. Do you remember if you dreamed last night?
I have very vivid dreams every night and often have lucid dreams before waking up.  Last night I had a dream that I was at an ice cream shop with my kids and couldn't decide on a flavor.  Which is weird.  I don't really like ice cream and it is freezing today.
3) The band Train is from San Francisco. Have you ever visited The City by the Bay?
When I was eight I visited my Aunt on our  way to Disney Land.
4) Lead singer Pat Monahan got his start in a Led Zeppelin cover band. Can you name a Led Zeppelin song?
Stairway to Heaven, although I am not a fan.
5) In doing research for this week's Saturday 9, Crazy Sam discovered a publication called Trains, The Magazine of Railroading. What's the last magazine you flipped through?
Taste of Home.  I was looking for the Dulce de Leche cheesecake recipe.  That blog post is coming soon...once we make it.
6) Do you consider yourself a leader or a follower?
Totally depends on the situation.  I will lead if a leader is needed. Or I will follow if there is a leader.  But I am not a follower in the sense of trends or doing what the cool kids do.  I just do my own thing don't care too much if people follow or not.
7) Scholars tell us that "To be or not to be" is Shakespeare's most quoted line. Give us another one.
"These words are razors to my wounded heart" Act I Scene I of my favorite Shakespeare play - Titus Andronicus
8) How do you listen to music on the go? Car radio? CD changer? iPod/mp3 player? Your phone?
Usually just the radio or a mixed CD Steven has made.
9) Are you a convincing liar?
Nope.  I am a terrible liar.

Saturday 9

I found a fun meme for Saturdays.  Lucky me gets to sling pancakes and bacon tomorrow morning, so this is going up tonight.  Stop by Saturday 9 and join the fun!

Saturday 9: Roar
(recommended by Cat)

If you're not familiar with today's song, you can hear it here.

1) The lyrics begin with Katy singing about when she used to "hold her tongue." Tell us about a time when you didn't speak up, but wish you had.

I really have a hard time holding my tongue.  I let responses to rude people fly out of my mouth at full sail.  However, I have learned that at work, my tongue needs to be held often.  In fact, it is held so often that I am sometimes scared to open up.  When I was pregnant I requested two days off a week (that I didn't normally work) for physical therapy.  The added belly weight of pregnancy was not kind to my damaged SI joint.  I told him that I was fine to work at full capacity and would bring a doctor's note if that changed for any reason.  He took me to one day a week.  Then, for two weeks I wasn't even on the schedule.  I waited through weeks of this crap hoping it would just "get better" on its own.  It didn't.  I finally spoke up about the possibility of filing partial unemployment and when told that wasn't possible, my mouth opened and my knowledge of the process spilled out.  I had my shifts back that next week.

This was a lesson for me.  A few weeks ago my hours were cut again.  I mentioned that this time I would have to file and then next week I had most of my hours back.  Restaurants hate paying servers unemployment.

2) The lyrics mention both lions and tigers. In addition to the big cats, the video shows a monkey and an elephant. If we were going to the zoo today, which animal would you want to see first?

The Denver Zoo has an alligator snapping turtle named Bob and we always visit him first.

3) Lions and tigers are carnivores. If we were having steak for dinner, would you order it rare, medium or well done?

I don't really eat meat.  Occasionally I will have a steak and when I do it is medium.  When I was pregnant with Persephone, I craved steak and chocolate cake.  Two things I rarely ate.  I also craved ham and bacon which I don't eat either.

4) Lots of photos are snapped at the zoo. Did you take your last picture with a camera or with your phone?

My phone.  I have an awesome DSLR but I lost the cord that connects to the computer and the SD card is really small, so until I get a new one, my phone pics will have to do.

5) The "Roar" video takes place in the jungle. The average temperature all year around in the rainforest is a humid 80º. The typical September day in Juneau is 49º, dry and sunny. Which sounds more comfortable?

Once upon a time I would have answered 80 and humid. But now that I am older and weigh a good deal more. Give me the dry and colder temps. In fact, I am ecstatic for fall. Colder temps, hoodies, and lots of soups.

6) In her youth, Katy took dance lessons at the local recreation hall in Santa Barbara. Crazy Sam took tap dance lessons as a girl, too. What about you? Were you sent off to dance class? Music lessons? Art class?

I taught the dance class (gym elective) in high school.  I took many fleeting theater, dance, and gymnastics classes as a kid.  I also dabbled in karate and basketball.  None of them really stuck except dance.  I love to dance.

7) Katy recently passed Justin Bieber as the most followed person on Twitter. What's the last message you re-tweeted?
I am not looking that far back. I haven't farted around on Twitter for years. That could change in the future though.
8) Congratulations! You just won the lottery! Do you want it in a lump sum, or would you prefer payments over the next 25 years?

I have argued many of people about this one.  I would take the annuity.  Hands down.  The way I can spend money, I would blow through that lump sum and end up like Dustin Diamond.

9) Did you get 8 hours sleep last night?

Ha!  I have a 4-month old.  Eight hours of continuous sleep is a long time away for me.
